Here’s a quick one, but it’s good. I promise.
Finding your purpose? Discovering yourself? Making the world a better place? Although all of those things are great, they can be combined into one singular concept: Self Actualization.
Okay so maybe you’ve heard this before, maybe not, or maybe you already know what it is. But have you ever thought about how it fits into your life? If not, I hope that you will after you finish reading this post.
Self Actualization is the point at which a person understands themselves, inside and out, and how they fit into the world around them. Think of it this way, if you are playing basketball, it’s important to know exactly what you’re good at and what you’re not so good at, before you start playing. That way, when you get on the court, you know whether you should stick to shooting, or pass the ball more!
If you are able to understand yourself, you can then use your talents to make the world a better place! Some good ways to start on this path are as follows:
1. START READING: I’ve heard many people say, “I just can’t find the time.” Well, don’t find the time, make it! You are the one who decides between an episode of Jersey Shore and 20 pages out of a book. If you start reading, it will put you on the path toward understanding yourself. Follow it, and see how deep it takes you.
2. Self Exploration: Writing out your strengths and weaknesses, asking others how you can improve, and working on yourself daily will all lead to a better understanding of who you are!
3. Write out your GOALS!: As much as it may seem like you don’t need to do this, you do! People that write out their goals and post them somewhere that they look EVERYDAY are much much more likely to accomplish those goals. Think about it, if you wake up to brush your teeth and see a note on your mirror that says, “Get an A in Physics 301,” you will be a heck of a lot more likely to spend part of that day studying physics. Right?
THE TAKEAWAY: Before you can solve any problem, you must first understand it. Well, if the problem is “What is the meaning of my life?” then its probably pretty important that you understand YOU before you go about solving it. Can you think of anything you wish to understand better about yourself?
